Israeli Pavilion at the London Design Biennale Opening Toast
We were excited that the London Design Biennale was officially open, not just because it was the first international festival to return in person to the UK in over a year – but mainly due to the Israeli Pavilion, ‘The Boiler Room’, designed by a team from TAU’s David Azrieli School of Architecture.
On Wednesday, 2 June 2021, we celebrated the Pavilion’s Opening with the design team from Israel, Israel Deputy Ambassador to the UK Sharon Bar-Li, Cultural Attaché Barak Ganor, TAU Trust Chair David Meller, installation sponsors and friends.
We began with a visit to the Israeli Pavilion, where guests received a personal tour from members of the design team. ‘The Boiler Room’, TAU’s installation for the Pavilion, is a multi-sensory exhibit made from 2,500 hashtagged boiler switches, that represent the boiling discourse and the tensions between what is global and what is national, and where people from all over the world can interact with each other’s opinions both digitally and personally.
Then, after a stroll amongst the other installations, we met on the Somerset House Terrace for a toast, to celebrate the opening of the Biennale and the return to life after what has been a very challenging year.
A week later, ‘The Boiler Room’ hosted a private tour for a special guest: Israeli Ambassador to the UK Tzipi Hotovely, who met personally with the designers to hear about the installation and how it has been received with great acclaim. Other guests to the Pavilion included members from BFAMI (British Friends of the Art Museums of Israel).

The digital trends of the last decade, social networks and the pandemic have all contributed to the multiplication of virtual platforms for social interaction, creating opportunities for debate and for the sharing of information. At the same time, hyperconnectivity appears to be amplifying an interesting process of polarisation.
